Peace

…let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace

"As one who is in the Lord Jesus, I am fully convinced that no food is unclean in itself. But if anyone regards someting as unclean, then for him it is unclean. If your brother is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love.  Do not by your eating destroy your brother for whom Christ died. Do not allow what you consider good to be spoken as evil. For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righterousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and approved by men.  Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and mutual edification."

Romans 14:14-19

What can we do to bring peace into the relationships of our life?

What is my main goal in the relationships of my life ?

Are my goals consistent with my declaration of faith?

Lord you establish peace in us…

"Lord, you establish peace for us; all we have acomplished you have done for us. "

                                      Isaiah 26:12

What does this verse truly say?

Do we thank God often enough for the blessings of our life?

If God is the author of the accomplishments of our life then on whose timetable should we operate?

Tuesday July 16

…the Lord blesses his people with peace

"The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace."

            Ps 29:11

        Do we pray for peace?

Have you ever experienced peace in an unlikely situation?

Do troubles sometimes make peace seem like a distant goal?

and the peace that surpasses all understanding…

"Do not be anxious about anythng, bit in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God. And the peace of God , which transcends all understanding, will guard our hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

         Phil 4:6-7

Is it possible to know this peace apart from Christ?

Is a lack of peace a warning sign in your life?

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you…

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."

          John 14:27

             Do you own this scripture?

Have you accepted the peace of Christ?

Friday July 19

Come to me all you who are weary and burdened…

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Taske my yoke upon you and learn from me, I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest in  your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

                     Mt 11:28 – 30

Rewrite this verse in your own words

Do you ever tire of the world and its ways?

Do you ever wonder which way to go?

           "LORD   GRANT  US  PEACE"

Have you ever prayed that? Looking around a lost world, a dangerous and violent neighborhood, a broken family or simply another restless night, have the words" Lord grant us peace" come to mind. I hope so. For today as always there is no other source for peace apart from Jesus. “No Jesus, no peace; Know Jesus, know peace" is far more than a bumper sticker. It is biblical truth and the truth will set you free.

If then as a supposition, peace is truly available. If the source is known and not some mystery; if it is a gift that all could receive, then why, oh why does it seem so rare? Several answers seem to apply. First for many, it is not the goal. In Mathew 8,  Jesus encounters two demon- possessed men. As you recall after Jesus drove the demons out of the men they entered into a herd of pigs. The pigs then raced headlong into a lake and died. The local town's people upon hearing the news pleaded with Jesus to leave the region. Apparently pigs were more valuable than men, profit preferable to peace. It is still the same today. We hear of individuals driven for success or power or profit. Many of these we celebrate. I watched one recently on 60 minutes. Successful, surrounded by all the comforts this life has to offer, he spoke of the focus, drive and determination it takes to make it big. The sacrifices made, the distractions avoided. His family had to be interviewed separately; they are no longer a part of his live. Apparently they were a distraction he had to sacrifice. As I listened to him, I heard a ton of words but I never heard an ounce of peace. Yet the world would view this man as a success. That’s the point. One will never find peace by the world's standards. The roads it offers doesn’t lead there.

It is in Christ and Christ alone where peace can be found. Consider John chapter 3 and 4. We are introduced to two people, Nicodemus and an unnamed woman by a well. One arrives in the cover of darkness, one in the noonday sun. Both were isolated and alone. One with everything this world has to offer, the other with plenty of nothing. They both met the answer and it was the same for both of them. They needed to start again to be reborn, to drink living water that will take away thirst and grow hope and joy and peace. I know that one accepted, I pray the other did as well but the truth remains that many are like the villagers valuing pigs over peace.

The other answer is personal maybe even difficult. Many have never heard the good news. We need to own Romans 10:14-15 and ask God to direct our feet so that we might be bearers of the news of peace. To whom much is given, much is expected and all of us who know the peace of Christ are expected to share the peace of Christ. If we do we shall discover another amazing truth. We will learn once again that the more we give the more we have. We will see changes in lives and know that God allowed us to be a part of that change, The Beatles once sang, “All we are saying is gift peace a chance”. As your pastor,  let me say that without the peace that surpasses all understanding this world doesn’t have a chance. Go in peace, grow in peace, live and love in peace, most of all show peace to the world around you my friends.
